Symbol: sacrament cup
The most memorable so far. I think my favorite too. Last night I made a Passover meal that included some of the symbolic foods: unleavened bread, bitter herbs (lettuce), and wine (grape juice). The menu for this year's dinner was simple: matzah, chicken soup with mini-matzo balls, and matzo-almond bark for dessert (really good!). I think the kids' favorite part was dining with lighted oil lamps.
Symbolic foods (for my notes next year):
Lamb - to remember the first Passover, a similitude of Jesus Christ
Unleavened bread - represents Israel's quick escape from Egypt, so sudden that the Israelites could not wait for their bread dough to rise but had to bake it unleavened. Leaven was also generally associated with sin, and especially with pride.
Bitter herbs - symbol of the Israelites' suffering in Egypt.
Wine - represents joy and celebration; usually celebrants drink 4 cups to stand for the 4 promises of redemption (we did 4 sips of grape juice). Also symbolic of the sacramental cup of wine Jesus took - which represents a promise to "redeem with an outstretched arm". At the time of Gethsemane, Jesus started the literal fulfillment of that exact promise made to Israel long ago.
